Top 10 Analytical Chemistry Journals in 2026

The best analytical chemistry journal is not necessarily the journal with the highest Impact Factor. A review journal, a biosensor journal and a chromatography journal serve different communities and publish different types of manuscripts. This guide compares ten leading journals using current publisher-reported metrics, scientific reputation, scope and practical suitability for analytical researchers.

Quick answer: Analytical Chemistry remains the broad flagship for original measurement science; TrAC Trends in Analytical Chemistry is a leading destination for critical reviews; Biosensors and Bioelectronics and Sensors and Actuators B: Chemical dominate analytical sensing; Journal of Chromatography A is the specialist choice for separation science; and Mass Spectrometry Reviews is dedicated to authoritative MS reviews.

How this top-ten list was created

The ranking uses the Journal Impact Factors and journal metrics displayed by the publishers on 2 August 2026. Most are 2025 Journal Impact Factors released in 2026. The list is then adjusted for disciplinary relevance, editorial selectivity, reputation and usefulness to researchers working in analytical chemistry.

This distinction matters. Review articles usually receive more citations than primary research, and a new open-access journal can change rapidly from one metric year to the next. A highly cited biosensor journal is not automatically the best destination for an LC-MS method, and a chromatography journal should not be judged against a review-only publication using one number alone.

Metrics are a snapshot, not a guarantee. Impact Factor describes average journal-level citation behavior. It does not predict the quality, reproducibility or future citations of an individual paper. Always verify the current metric and author instructions on the official journal website before submission.

1. Analytical Chemistry

Impact Factor 7.3 · ACS Publications · Broad original research

Analytical Chemistry is one of the most established and most widely cited journals in chemical measurement science [1]. Its scope includes sampling, measurement and data analysis across mass spectrometry, separations, spectroscopy, electrochemistry, sensing, imaging, instrumentation, surface analysis, omics and chemometrics.

The decisive requirement is a substantial analytical advance. According to the official guidelines, a paper based on an established method must offer a significantly improved and original application [2]. Routine validation, a minor sensitivity improvement or application of a familiar method to one more analyte is unlikely to survive editorial screening.

Best for: conceptually new measurement strategies, high-impact LC-HRMS or MS instrumentation, single-cell and spatial analysis, new separation mechanisms, advanced chemometrics and broadly relevant analytical platforms.

2. TrAC Trends in Analytical Chemistry

Impact Factor 13.5 · CiteScore 22.7 · Critical reviews

TrAC Trends in Analytical Chemistry publishes concise, critical overviews of new developments in analytical chemistry [3]. Its high citation metric reflects both the quality of the journal and the generally higher citation rate of review articles.

A successful TrAC manuscript must do more than catalogue papers. It should identify trends, compare competing approaches, expose unresolved limitations and define future research needs. A narrow literature summary without critical analysis is a poor fit.

Best for: non-target analysis, exposomics, artificial intelligence in analytical chemistry, advanced sample preparation, microplastics analysis, emerging MS acquisition strategies and critical reviews of measurement quality.

3. Biosensors and Bioelectronics

Impact Factor 11.8 · CiteScore 19.2 · Biosensing

Biosensors and Bioelectronics is a leading journal for biosensor concepts, bioelectronic interfaces, diagnostic devices, wearable systems and related analytical technologies [4].

High sensitivity alone is not sufficient. Competitive submissions normally need a convincing recognition principle, device or interface innovation, appropriate controls, realistic matrices and comparison with established techniques. Papers based only on a new nanomaterial combined with a familiar detection reaction face a high novelty threshold.

Best for: electrochemical and optical biosensors, continuous monitoring, point-of-care diagnostics, lab-on-chip biosensing, wearable sensors and bioelectronic interfaces.

4. ACS Measurement Science Au

2025 Impact Factor 14.7 · Gold open access · Established 2021

ACS Measurement Science Au covers experimental, computational and theoretical research across chemical measurement science [5]. Its scope closely resembles the broad measurement-science scope of Analytical Chemistry, including chemometrics, MS, imaging, separations, spectroscopy, sensors, omics and instrumentation.

The journal is fully open access. That can be valuable when a funder requires immediate public access or when maximum accessibility is a strategic priority. Because it is a relatively young journal and its metric has risen rapidly, authors should evaluate fit, readership and open-access cost in addition to the current Impact Factor.

Best for: broad analytical advances that require gold open access, interdisciplinary measurement science and high-visibility methods with reusable data or software.

5. Sensors and Actuators B: Chemical

Impact Factor 8.3 · CiteScore 15.2 · Chemical transducers

Sensors and Actuators B: Chemical focuses on research and development involving chemical transducers [6]. It is particularly strong in functional sensing materials, interfaces, device engineering, gas sensors and analytical sensor systems.

The journal is a better fit than a general analytical journal when the transducer, material-to-device integration or sensing mechanism is the central innovation. Real-sample validation and selectivity remain important, but the device physics and engineering must also be convincing.

Best for: gas sensors, electrochemical transducers, optical sensor devices, wearable chemical sensors, nanomaterial-based interfaces and integrated sensing platforms.

6. Talanta

Impact Factor 6.7 · CiteScore 11.2 · Broad applied analysis

Talanta publishes original research, short communications and reviews covering a broad range of analytical chemistry [7]. It is often a strong destination for applied methods that combine meaningful analytical novelty with extensive validation and real-sample analysis.

Fit is stronger when the paper solves a genuine analytical problem and demonstrates selectivity, robustness and comparison with existing approaches. A manuscript consisting primarily of optimization graphs and a low detection limit is rarely persuasive without mechanistic or practical advancement.

Best for: sample preparation, spectroscopy, electroanalysis, sensors, chromatography, environmental and food analysis, pharmaceutical analysis and multianalyte method development.

7. Analytica Chimica Acta

Impact Factor 6.1 · CiteScore 10.9 · Methodological advancement

Analytica Chimica Acta publishes original analytical research and critical reviews across fundamental and applied measurement science [8].

Its official guide asks authors to explain how the proposed methodology compares with previously reported methods for the same analytes or problem [9]. That requirement should shape the manuscript from the beginning: include a fair benchmark table, head-to-head experiments when possible and a clear statement of the analytical advance.

Best for: new analytical principles, validated MS and spectroscopy methods, chemometrics, sample preparation, sensors, speciation and methods that clearly outperform the state of the art.

8. Mass Spectrometry Reviews

Impact Factor 6.0 · Review journal · Wiley

Mass Spectrometry Reviews is devoted to substantial review articles in mass spectrometry [10]. It is not the appropriate journal for a conventional primary-research LC-MS manuscript.

A strong submission should organize a mature but actively developing field, provide critical comparison and offer a durable reference for the community. Authors should usually demonstrate extensive expertise and should check whether prior contact or a proposal is expected before preparing a full review [11].

Best for: high-resolution MS, ion mobility, native MS, MS imaging, environmental screening, proteomics, metabolomics, fragmentation, ionization and instrumentation reviews.

9. Microchimica Acta

2025 Impact Factor 5.4 · Micro/nanoscale analysis · Springer Nature

Microchimica Acta focuses on analytical sciences and technologies at the micro- and nanoscale [12]. Its scope includes point-of-care technologies, wearable biosensors, in-vivo monitoring, micro/nanomotors, biomedical imaging and nano-enabled analytical approaches.

The journal’s submission guidance emphasizes genuine chemical or biochemical analytical novelty and advanced micro/nanomaterials. Research papers are limited to 6,000 words, eight display items and 35 references; review proposals should be discussed with the editorial office before submission [13].

Best for: nano-enabled analytical chemistry, microfluidic platforms, wearable and point-of-care sensors, analytical imaging and miniaturized sample preparation.

10. Journal of Chromatography A

Impact Factor 4.0 · CiteScore 6.9 · Separation science

Journal of Chromatography A is a specialist journal for fundamental and applied separation science [14]. Its coverage includes liquid and gas chromatography, capillary electrophoresis, multidimensional separations, stationary phases, retention mechanisms, sample preparation and related detection strategies.

Its lower Impact Factor relative to broad review or biosensor journals should not be interpreted as lower scientific value. For a paper whose principal advance is a new separation mechanism, column chemistry, gradient concept or extraction strategy, the specialist readership may be far more relevant.

Best for: HPLC and UHPLC fundamentals, HILIC, GC, multidimensional chromatography, column technology, retention modelling, miniaturized separations and advanced sample preparation.

Best choices for environmental LC-HRMS and non-target screening

For an environmental non-target screening paper, the most appropriate journal depends on the paper’s main contribution:

  • New measurement or identification concept: Analytical Chemistry.
  • Critical review of NTS workflows: TrAC.
  • Method with extensive validation and comparison: Analytica Chimica Acta or Talanta.
  • Chromatographic or sample-preparation advance: Journal of Chromatography A.
  • Environmental discovery with major exposure or risk implications: consider Environmental Science & Technology [15], even though it is not primarily an analytical chemistry journal.

Five reasons analytical manuscripts are rejected

  1. Incremental novelty. A new analyte, nanomaterial or sample matrix does not automatically constitute a new analytical principle.
  2. Unfair comparison. Comparing a new method only with outdated literature — or comparing detection limits calculated by different conventions — weakens the claim.
  3. Insufficient validation. Recovery from one spiked sample is not enough. Matrix effects, precision, bias, selectivity, robustness and uncertainty should match the intended application.
  4. Unrealistic samples. A sensor tested only in buffer or an LC-MS workflow tested only with neat standards does not demonstrate real-world performance.
  5. Wrong journal fit. Strong chromatography can be rejected by a biosensor journal, and a routine assay can be rejected by a journal seeking fundamental measurement science.

How to select the journal before writing

Read the scope. Read the formal scope and at least 20 recent papers. Search for your technique, analyte class and application. Similar papers from five years ago are less informative than the current editorial direction.

Identify the central claim. Decide whether the paper’s main advance is measurement science, separation, sensing, instrumentation, application or environmental significance. The journal should match the main claim — not every technique mentioned.

Check article type. Review proposals, letters, technical notes and full research articles follow different rules. Do not write a complete unsolicited review before checking whether a proposal or invitation is required.

Check access and cost. Confirm whether the journal is hybrid or fully open access, whether your institution has a publishing agreement and whether the funder requires a particular licence.

Honourable mentions

Several excellent journals fall outside this top ten because the ranking cannot represent every analytical subfield:

  • Analyst [16] — a historic RSC journal covering fundamental and applied analytical and bioanalytical science; 2025 Impact Factor 3.6.
  • Journal of Proteome Research [17] — strong for proteomics and MS-based systems biology.
  • Journal of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry [18] — specialist primary research in mass spectrometry.
  • Metabolomics [19] — dedicated to metabolomics methods and biological applications.
  • Food Chemistry [20] — often better than a general analytical journal when the scientific contribution is mainly food composition, authenticity or safety.
  • Environmental Science & Technology [15] — a leading option when an analytical advance reveals environmentally important processes, exposure or risk.

Final verdict

For broad original analytical research, Analytical Chemistry remains the most defensible first-choice flagship. For a critical review, TrAC is one of the strongest analytical destinations. Biosensors and Bioelectronics and Sensors and Actuators B lead in sensing, while Journal of Chromatography A provides the most focused audience for separation science.

Do not choose a journal from Impact Factor alone. The best journal is the one whose readers need the result, whose scope matches the manuscript’s central claim and whose recent papers demonstrate that the editors value the type of advance being reported. A specialist paper in the correct journal will often have more scientific influence than the same paper forced into a higher-metric but poorly matched venue.
